Deciding on getting a wedding planner can be a difficult decision depending on what type of personality you have. For me, I knew from the start that I was not going to need one because I had an exact vision of what I wanted for the day of our wedding and what steps needed to be taken. If you are newly engaged and do not know what you want, it’s hard for you to make decisions, and have no idea where to begin, hiring a wedding planner may be a good idea.
Depending on what your overall budget is for your wedding can be the deciding factor on what kind of wedding planner you can afford. If you are planning your wedding with a low budget and you think you need a planner do not just rule it out because of your budget because they offer many different services. Depending on the city you are getting married in rates change and wedding planning firms/planners all charge differently for different packages. If you already have booked your venue, depending on what kind of staff they provide can be a factor in the wedding planner you hire too.
If you have decided to hire a wedding planner, first start doing your research online and ask people that you know that have gotten married who they worked with. Finding a wedding planner is personal, you are going to be working with him/her to carry out one of your most important days of your life, so you want to make sure that your personalities mesh. Before you start to narrow down your decision talk with your fiancé to figure out how active you want/need the planner to be. You do not want to go into the consultation and have someone push their services on you, so it is a good idea to be on the same page as your S.O.
After you have found a couple firms/planners that you like online and you have an idea of what type of service you want, it is time to have a consultation with them, here are some questions to ask:
- Are you available on my wedding date?
- What’s the cost of the average wedding you plan?
- What type of services do you offer? ex: Day of coordination, creating the overall vision, handle the event styling?
- How many weddings have you planned?
- How many weddings do you work on at a time?
- How many people from your staff will be at the wedding?
- How will you help me stay on my budget?
- Will there be additional expenses on top of your flat rate fee?
If you go into the consultation prepared and honest with yourself you have a great chance of finding the type of planner that you want/need for you wedding. Remember, this is your day, so make sure your personality is shining through the event, it will be a day you always remember and never want to forget. 🙂
